Eight Diagram Pole is the most famous weapon of the Hung Gar kung fu system. It is called Ng Long Ba Kwa Kwun in Chinese, which literally translates to ‘Fifth Brother Eight Trigram Pole’. According to Hung Gar tradition, this long pole form was created by the ‘fifth brother’ of the spear-wielding Yang Clan, who became a monk. It applies techniques in the different directions of the Chinese geomantic ‘Ba Kwa’ emblem. The form employs one end, or ‘head’, of the pole in an impressive arsenal of techniques.
